Fields of Mistria Coop or Barn First? Costs & Animals
Should you build a coop or a barn first in Fields of Mistria? Compare costs, materials, capacity, and animals for each, then pick the right first building.
Short answer: build the one that houses the animals you actually want first. If you are undecided, the coop is the cheaper and lighter first step. A Small Coop costs 500t, 25 Wood, and 25 Stone less than a Small Barn, while both start with room for four animals.
The two buildings follow the same size ladder, so the real decision is not which one is “better” but which animals and which costs fit your farm right now.
Coop vs. barn at a glance
| Small Coop | Small Barn | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | 1,500t | 2,000t |
| Materials | 75 Wood, 50 Stone | 100 Wood, 75 Stone |
| Capacity | 4 animals | 4 animals |
| Animals | Chicken, Duck, Rabbit, Capybara | Cow, Sheep, Horse, Alpaca |
| Available | From the start | From the start |
Both buildings grow the same way:
- Small (4 animals, available from the start): Coop 1,500t + 75 Wood + 50 Stone; Barn 2,000t + 100 Wood + 75 Stone.
- Medium (8 animals, Ranching level 20): Coop 3,000t + 100 Wood + 75 Stone; Barn 4,000t + 125 Wood + 100 Stone.
- Large (12 animals, Ranching level 40): Coop 6,000t + 125 Wood + 100 Stone; Barn 8,000t + 150 Wood + 125 Stone.
At every size the barn costs a third more coin, plus 25 extra Wood and 25 extra Stone. Both Large versions can also hold an Animal Sprite Statue. Coops have one feature barns do not: incubators for hatchable eggs (1 in a Small Coop, 2 in Medium, 4 in Large).
When to build a coop first
Start with a coop if:
- You want chickens, ducks, rabbits, or capybaras. None of these can live in a barn.
- Your savings are tight. The Small Coop is the lowest-cost way to start ranching.
- Wood and Stone are your bottleneck. The coop needs 25 less of each, which leaves more for paths, fences, and storage.
- You plan to breed poultry. Incubators come only with coops.
When to build a barn first
Start with a barn if:
- You want cows, sheep, horses, or alpacas. These need a barn, so a coop will not help you get them.
- You have already saved 2,000t, 100 Wood, and 75 Stone. The extra cost is then not a reason to wait.
- Your animal plan is centred on barn animals. Building the coop first would only delay the building you actually need.
Plan space for both
Most farms end up with both buildings, so reserve room for the second one even if you only build one now. Put the first building beside your main route, leave an open edge for the second, and keep a shared storage spot between them so one ranching loop covers both.
The Fields of Mistria farm layout guide shows how to give animals their own zone without blocking the main route, and the Fields of Mistria coop guide covers coop sizes, incubators, and how to move a coop safely once you know where it belongs. When you are ready to sketch the yard, block it out in the farm layout planner.
